The U/M/S is reportedly the brainchild of Jonah Goldstein. The notoriously reclusive Brooklyn-born artist surfaces occasionally for idiosyncratic and unlikely collaborations with such varied artists as counterculture icon Crispin Glover, comedy pioneers The Lonely Island, and bandmate, Bill Byrne. After gaining acclaim
as an award-winning sound designer and editor of motion pictures, with works screening at the Sundance, Urbanworld, SXSW, New York, Human Rights Watch, First Run and numerous other film festivals worldwide, Goldstein briefly returned to the Jersey shore, to embark on an as-yet-unfinished literary project with his older brother,
a priest from Boston, while beginning work on the debut Harmful Free Radicals album with childhood friend, Bill Byrne.
His latest undertaking, The Unevenness of the Moon's Surface, announced in January 2006, is as much a lifestyle undertaking as it is a musical one. The U/M/S is Goldstein's critical exploration into his own existence. U/M/S is equal parts documentary and experimental composition utilizing unique recording techniques.
Goldstein began documenting audio from his day to day life, often using sound equipment more specifically developed for surveillance and espionage than music. Goldstein has incorporated these covert field recordings into his music creating a unique genre and method. With influences as diverse as The Conet Project, Tape,
Cody ChesnuTT, Evolutionary Control Committee and John Cage cited as inspiration for this uniquely captivating project that possesses a level of intimacy rarely achieved by similar artists.
Welcoming the audience into both his life and his music, The U/M/S explores different events and facets of the artist's own life and the world he encounters. 2006 will see the debut of the artist's weekly podcast and the release of the artist's first as-yet-untitled solo release. The artist currently resides in the San
Fernando Valley and spends much of his spare time riding the bus.
